in Aztec mythology, Popo, a warrior, fell in love with Izta, the daughter of the Tlaxcaltec chief. before going to battle, he asked for the chief’s permission to marry Izta, which was granted on the condition that he returned victorious
a jealous rival deceived Izta, telling her that Popo had died in combat. Iztaccíhuatl dies of a broken heart. Popocatepetl returns victorious but only to find his love lifeless. he carried her to a mountain, laid her body, lit a torch and knelt beside, vowing to remain by her side forever
they were transformed into the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccíhuatl, symbolizing their eternal love. Popo is Mexico’s second highest peak + most active volcano while Iztaccíhuatl remains dormant
